Before there was Zippy (b. 1970), there were comics by Bill Griffith. In fact, after Zippy, there are still other comics by Bill Griffith. Most came out of the early Underground Comics publishing scene in San Francisco CA (late 1960's-early 1980's). Some notable examples:
